Question 1

How long should I expect a site migration to take?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on the site's size and complexity, we'll give you a real timeline after auditing what's actually there. A small brochure site and a large ecommerce catalog are very different jobs.

Question 2

Will my search rankings survive a migration?

Accepted Answer

They can, if every URL is mapped to its new destination before the switch happens. Rankings get lost when redirects are missing or incomplete, not from the migration itself.

Question 3

Can I migrate without redesigning the site at the same time?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and that's usually the safer approach. A migration moves what already exists. Combining it with a redesign at the same time makes it harder to tell which change caused a problem if something goes wrong.

Question 4

What happens if something breaks after the migration is already live?

Accepted Answer

A real migration process includes verification before the switch and monitoring immediately after, specifically to catch this before it becomes a bigger problem. That's why verification matters more than speed.

Question 5

Do I need to migrate everything at once, or can it be done in phases?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the site, but phased migrations are sometimes the safer option for large or complex sites, since it limits how much could go wrong in any single step.

Question 6

Will my email stop working during the migration?

Accepted Answer

It shouldn't, if the DNS and mail records are mapped and verified before the switch, the same way page URLs are. Email problems during a migration almost always trace back to a DNS change that wasn't checked against the existing mail setup first.

Question 7

What breaks after a migration that nobody notices straight away?

Accepted Answer

Scheduled tasks, backups, and connections to other services. None of them produce a visible symptom, so all three survive a casual look at the site. They are typically found weeks later, at the point somebody needs a backup or notices a routine message stopped arriving.

Question 8

Who is responsible if something breaks after the move?

Accepted Answer

Agree that before the migration rather than after. Establish what is covered, for how long, and what counts as a migration fault against a pre-existing problem. Without it, the first week becomes a discussion about responsibility at exactly the moment the site needs attention.
